Alcohol use among older聽M膩ori聽is an area requiring immediate attention due to the increasing older聽M膩ori聽population, the numerous聽health impacts of alcohol use and the scarcity of knowledge about older people鈥檚 alcohol use, particularly among older聽M膩ori. Ms Herbert聽adopted a聽M膩ori聽centred research approach to聽investigate the social context of older聽M膩ori聽alcohol use聽via three related studies. The聽results highlighted聽three central features that contextualised聽M膩ori alcohol use. These were聽wh膩nau;聽whanaungatanga; and diversity.聽Ms Herbert鈥檚 research suggests聽important shifts in theoretical approaches to understanding M膩ori alcohol use that will guide future research聽and provides聽suggestions for the development of culturally responsive alcohol policy and health promotion practice to better meet the health and wellbeing needs of M膩ori in Aotearoa.聽
