Ms Ting focused on the structuring and functionalisation of titania. The structuring of titania, towards use in Gr瓣tzel solar cells, has been explored in previous research using two complementary methods: temptation and self-assembly. The mode of dye binding to titania and the stability of adsorbed dyes was investigated to aid work toward the design of a self-assembled titania superlattice, as well as to assist in the analysis of dye performance in Gr瓣tzel cells. The research has shown that while dyes are adsorbed and intimately associated with titania, the mode of dye binding is different on a dry electrode than upon dispersed and solvated titania. The knowledge gained on nanostructuring titania and dye binding will speed the development of self-assembled titania arrays formed using small molecular linkers.
